Warning: spoilers below for Stranger Things Season 4 – Volume 2

In the series’ first season, Matthew Modine’s Dr. Brenner appears to have met his end, only to make a surprising comeback this season, and with minimal injuries. Things didn’t work out so well for Dr. Brenner this time, as he revealed his selfish intentions to use Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) to reconnect with his first patient on the Upside Down, who has mutated into Vecna. But this time, Dr. Brenner didn’t get out of his situation so easily, as he was shot and killed by the military. He may have shared a tender moment with Eleven before he died, but she turned and walked away from him in his last moments, leaving him bleeding in the desert.

Eleven will eventually go on to confront Vecna in his mental den, as the villain manages to outrun her and Max (Sadie Sink). Fortunately, Mike (Fin Wolfhard) expresses his love for Eleven and enables her to escape his clutches long enough to neutralize him. In the Upside Down, Steve (Joe Kerry), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), and Robin (Maya Hawk) find Vicna’s paralyzed body, setting him on fire and shooting him with a shotgun. Vecna took quite a bit of damage, apparently killing him. Given his abilities and the many fake character deaths in previous seasons, we can’t rule out his worldly powers allowing him to survive.

This confrontation also left Max seriously injured, and while she survived the ordeal, she ended up unresponsive and in a coma.

In what would certainly be the most tragic death among fans was Eddie Monson (Joseph Quinn), especially given his public trajectory. He witnessed the first death of the season caused by Vecna, which drove him into hiding. Feeling as though he had acted cowardly, when he saw an opportunity to fend off opponents in the Upside Down to buy time to escape Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), he hoped to make up for himself. Even after being pulled away by his new friend and the playwrights who died when Vecna was defeated, his injuries were pretty severe and he died in Dustin’s arms at the Upside Down.

Vecna may have died, but he succeeded in creating a rift in the Hawkins, resulting in the death of Jason Carver (Mason Dye), who had been rallying the community around him in search of Eddie, claiming he was the leader of a demonic cult.
